SUB-ROMAN GALLIC INFANTRYMAN
An extract from Armies of the Dark Ages 600-1066

30. SUB-ROMAN GALLIC INFANTRYMAN
Although taken from a Merovingian source of c. 600 this figure is probably typical of those late Roman units which Procopius records still surviving in Gaul in the mid-6th century,
wearing Roman uniforms and serving under Roman standards.
These sub-Roman soldiers were of 2 kinds - the Laeti, descendants of the old military settlers, and the Milites, the descendants of the regular army units.
Most were Germanic.
30a shows a similar helmet of c. 550 found at Isère.
