*This total includes 22,211 artillerists, engineers and other personnel serving with
artillery companies.
1 de Segur was in Paris recovering from wounds received in the Peninsula.
2 The composition of the Guard artillery was described by General Lauriston in his letter to the Emperor dated 2 April, 1809 (Archives de l’armee). It will be noted that the organization for the Guard Volante (companies a cheval) is different than what is generally accepted as "normal" organization of six pieces of ordinance per company. Since this report by Lauriston, as well as all returns by all commanders, is empirical data-that is, facts reflected by direct observation and not by theory or ficticous organization-we see that the Volante companies possessed a different organization than they might have had in prior or later campaigns. Also, the fact that the Volante companies possessed 24 pouce howitzers is no mistake in translation.
3 The 11th CORPS D’ARMEE was the Army of Dalmatia.
4 Marmont had one of the largest staffs of any corps commander, consisting of 80 officers, 39 of who were artillery officers.
5 The two dragoon divisions of Grouchy and Pully were part of the Army of Italy. Detached for service on the right flank of the entire army, both divisions were under the overall command of General Grouchy.
6 General Montbrun’s division was placed under Marshal Davout’s orders and incorporated Pajol’s brigade for field operations.
